VIVA RIVA

viva riva is the talk of the town in these daze
and i ma dyin to see this movie
but being in italy, i doubt that i will be able to catch it in the near future
even though roma international film festival and venice film festival are still to come
roma fest is much more interested in bringing hollywood stars to the festival than programming
while the venice fest might just probably screen it
the movie will be released in the UK and the US
but i very much doubt that Italy will follow, we hope and wait and see
this movie has been getting a lot of mixed and rave reviews
a serious and engagin review here
and an interview with the director here

if i may, allow me to cut and paste one review/remark from a youtuber
that kinda like sums it up, tho you can see it from the trailer.

'Sex, sex, raunchy sex, porno sex, wanton killing, gruesome torture,
a gangster obsessed with a lightskinned, red haired sex toy - sound exciting so far?
Love of money, fast cars, the lifestyles of the rich and unscrupulous - I wish I stayed home'

still wanna see it

for other reasons tho,
for one, i saw/heard the director of the movie speak on The Fabulous Picture Show on Aljazeera
and i liked what he had to say and how he said it
and two, this movie has scooped  6 awards at the AMAA [African Movie Academy Award]
Best Film Best Director Best Cinematography Best Production design...
and three, i dont think i hav seen any production  coming out of the Congo
expect for the photo exhibitions on style and music in the congo
oh and LUMUMBA by Raoul Peck  and Pieces d'identites by  Mweze Ngangura
so this is kinda like refreshing

Samora Machel Son of Africa

Samora Machel Son of the Soil
i was jus wondering if its true that the beautyfull ones are really gone or yet to be born
just the other day Alassane Ouattara was officially inaugurated as the prez of Ivory Coast
am not quite happy about it to be honest nor  was i happy with his predecessor,
Laurent Gbagbo, whose refusal to stand down caused a conflict which  had people killed.
I dont expect much from Mr IMF Oattara who is buddies with Nicholas Sarkozy
Sarkozy is evil, just bad news for Africa that man....
As I was watching this Clip of Prez Samora Machel i kept wondering how he would have turned outwould he have turned out like Mugabe? Jammeh? Museveni? and their ilk
I wonder...but then again sometimes i wonder too much
this shud be about honouring such true souls
this is just to say the beautiful ones were among us and taken away
and there will be more beautiful ones to be born, if they are not born already
May his beautiful soul rest in peace, tho i doubt, considering what is happening these days
he be probably turning in his grave
he is remembered still

The Black Power Mixtape

Danny Glover talks about the documentary film that he co-produced
hope this film meks it to the shores of Italy
tho i doubt very much, but i still hope
if it does/or did, it would probably be at some obscure far off venue
or will hear about it after it has been screened, thats jus how tings goes around here
this is definately a must see
Respect also goes to the Activist Mr Danny Glover

Let him rest in peace

ah finaly an enjoyable movie to watch
Let him rest in peace thats the title of the movie
this one is all about style an aesthetics
waht impressed me about this film was
it was jus simple and straight forward
and did not try to be this or that it was jus a movie
simple story line, simple set and a minimal cast
the set design and custume/wardrobe was what caught mah attention
there is a shot where the main actor is walking around in woman's shoes
but that was not disturbin or anything but jus noticeable
it did not distract you from the story tho you certainly notice
these little details that added that special touch to the movie
in the background,a potrait there a masterpiece here
the style of shooting was also impressionable
it was like still pictures, yu kno when one poses for a picture?
thats how it was shot, the sequences, so we would hav a lot of scenes
where people are just standing and watching
the acting was a bit funny too
minimal dialogue not too much drama just plain an simple
I quite enjoyed this movie, the director has a sense of style
infact he did say [at the Q& A]that he was into art at the time the movie was made
and that i could see and appreciate i knew i was not gonna be disappointed.

let each one go where he may

this is the film i went to see the other night
not las nite, cos i didnt watch a movie las nite
i went to a reggae concert...mo on that later....
so it was the nite befo whe i checked this movie
i am still undecided about this movie
i am yet to make up mah mind about it
yet i kno that i will be talking about it for days to com
but i think it was the synopsis that got me confused a bit
i thought i wud come out knowing a bit mo history of surinam
i thought i wud hear old people talkin and recounting tales from the past
but instead it was 90 min of silence (seriously, the two actors did not say a word, not even to ea other)
it is the technical execution really that gets a high rating
and the director's boldness to forage into the world of experimental film making
and the two brothers'
(natives of surinam who commute between the city and the village)
who are guiding us thru this movie thru their instict and humility
it was a european premier i think, so it was fully packed
but half way thru the movie, the cinema was half empty
by the end of the movie we was about a quarter of what started off as a full house
a lot of people left, because like i said, its just not a mainstream type of movie
only a few people stayed until the end of the movie for the Q & A
it would get the industry award, if there was any, becuase the industry people are raving about it
i mean, it was presented/introduced by the festival director himself
the movie director is american, so he has got a lot to say, he even conducted the Q&A himself! gosh these americans!
and the two brothers are the original authentic no english no dutch surinamees
so the american director had to translate for them
i wud put this movie under the art movie section or even the anthropological movies type o' ting
like i said, i am yet to make up mah mind about it....

The Well

Las nite went to watch a movie called the well
is a coming of age story, fictional with a biographical tinge to it
or shud we say it was inspired by the directors' life story
beautifully shot, t'was lyrical, the way those landscape images
flowed in and with the storyline
the lead actor is a young bwoy of about 14
who is very photogenic and captivating
the director says [during the Q&;A after the screening]
he has been working with this bwoy since he was seven
so the chemistry was jus natural, i cud tell
the script was tight too...this bwoy is basically askin the question
what happens after death? wha is does it mean this death?
an he embarks on a personal journey initiated by the death of his cousin...
it was a cinematographically driven approach
i liked it, and i gave it a rating of 5! which is the highest i.e. very good
tho i honestly think it was not very good but i gave it a very good anyway
the director and the scriptwriter were the first people i interacted with
they often come to the film office so....

Borders

Las nite i went to watch a movie called The Border.
its a strange non fiction story. A documentary film to be precise.
and its about a border. the strangest border that exist.
people in the film kept saying,

for over 40 years i have waited for this border to disappear
basically them (politicians) just cut a line with a pencil on the map
and created this border. what them did not realise was that
they literaly cut through peoples houses and lives and souls and shit
so relatives were separated from ea other
they had to speak to ea other over the border, not the fence like normal neighbors do
but across the border.
One incident was that a small girl was visitin her grandparents

when the border came into effect
so she was separated from her parents for the rest of her life
she could only talk to them at the border
them people were not allowed to cross the border....
strange shit ah go happen in this world
in ya dis ya time....
