did yu kno that ever since i came here
i hav bin takin a cold shower every mornin
in this weather
where it snows one moment
then it ah rain the next
then the wind jus blows yu around that corner babe
then mr sun com out to give us nicessness every now and then
all this in one day, four seasons in one day
just like cape town, so i guess thats why i get this familiar vyb with this place
and then i am sittin in an office with a view
an everytime mr sun come out to play
i am there ready and waitin
so at times i pass an hour or so jus watchin the sun
and how it reflects on this here city
in ya dis ya time........

i am taking cold showers
because the hostel where i be stayin
don hav hot water for showers
so.....

i did not watch any movies las nite
an it was hectic in the day
then there were the awards for the short movies
and there is always a party goin on
but i don do industry parties
i do the reggae twenty four seven
no apologies no explanation no justification
is jus is
in ya dis ya time.....

let each one go where he may

this is the film i went to see the other night
not las nite, cos i didnt watch a movie las nite
i went to a reggae concert...mo on that later....
so it was the nite befo whe i checked this movie
i am still undecided about this movie
i am yet to make up mah mind about it
yet i kno that i will be talking about it for days to com
but i think it was the synopsis that got me confused a bit
i thought i wud come out knowing a bit mo history of surinam
i thought i wud hear old people talkin and recounting tales from the past
but instead it was 90 min of silence (seriously, the two actors did not say a word, not even to ea other)
it is the technical execution really that gets a high rating
and the director's boldness to forage into the world of experimental film making
and the two brothers'
(natives of surinam who commute between the city and the village)
who are guiding us thru this movie thru their instict and humility
it was a european premier i think, so it was fully packed
but half way thru the movie, the cinema was half empty
by the end of the movie we was about a quarter of what started off as a full house
a lot of people left, because like i said, its just not a mainstream type of movie
only a few people stayed until the end of the movie for the Q & A
it would get the industry award, if there was any, becuase the industry people are raving about it
i mean, it was presented/introduced by the festival director himself
the movie director is american, so he has got a lot to say, he even conducted the Q&A himself! gosh these americans!
and the two brothers are the original authentic no english no dutch surinamees
so the american director had to translate for them
i wud put this movie under the art movie section or even the anthropological movies type o' ting
like i said, i am yet to make up mah mind about it....
in ya dis ya time.....

The Well

Las nite went to watch a movie called the well
is a coming of age story, fictional with a biographical tinge to it
or shud we say it was inspired by the directors' life story
beautifully shot, t'was lyrical, the way those landscape images
flowed in and with the storyline
the lead actor is a young bwoy of about 14
who is very photogenic and captivating
the director says [during the Q&;A after the screening]
he has been working with this bwoy since he was seven
so the chemistry was jus natural, i cud tell
the script was tight too...this bwoy is basically askin the question
what happens after death? wha is does it mean this death?
an he embarks on a personal journey initiated by the death of his cousin...
it was a cinematographically driven approach
i liked it, and i gave it a rating of 5! which is the highest i.e. very good
tho i honestly think it was not very good but i gave it a very good anyway
the director and the scriptwriter were the first people i interacted with
they often come to the film office so....

rotterdam ... continued

cha!
as i was sayin the other day
tis the city that interests me most
bin here befo, about two or three years back
naturally t'was different then
the city had jus recently won the city of the yeah award
or sumtin to that effect cyaan rememba too well
i could see why but did not appreciate it much then
as i had a lot o' tings on me mind then
like how can i get mah ass back to amsterdam and how quick
t'was a disastrous trip, we was a group, and group dynamics took ova

so all me wanted to do was go to
mah favourite coffee shop in the red light district an hang...
but i was broke, as usual, so i had to hang here
so i did mah favourite pastime
walk walk walk with no destination in mind
along the way i bumped into two brethren
i asked them where i cud get sum reggae club coffee shop vybz n shit
them seh the aint no place like dat
but oh wait what about the bob marley coffee shop
the other guy hesitated, him did not want to send me there
him seh am alone, is far, might be dangerous fo a likkle gyal like me blah blah blah
me seh jus tell me where and how and
like the italians say: ci penso io
them tell me to walk down this ya road and jus continue str8
until i get to bob marley coffee shop

and i did. i walked in, i got buzzed in rather...
a very curious place it was i rememba
almost dingy with a lot of regulars there [i cud tell]
i ordered mah tea and chose mah spot at a corner
afta mah second cup me strike a conversation with the bar man
a moroccan who is Dutch anyway
by the time i was on mah second spliff
i start to check the composition of the people in there
its all men. young men. old men. middle man.
african. arab. indonesian. indian.
whatta curious mix it was.
an they were all Netherlenders!
fo me an arab chillin wiht an african chillin with an indian chillin with an indonesian
was such a sight to behold [i did not kno about surinam then]
half way thru mah spliff
me also check that there is no female species in sight only the I
and yu can also tell that these regular men don even bring their dates there
by the time i reach mah third spliff i notice sumtin else
all these male species are startin to flirt with me
thats mah cue, gots to go. i mah out!

i hit the streets again.
i am checking that i am in another part of the city
lots of africans arabs mixed and hardly any dutch people per se
i notice that i am actually inna de ghetto [where i belong ha ha ha haha]
ghetto fabulous faces ghetto yutes hangin by the corner
but mah western [educated] side of me got into the way o'tings
me started getting paranoid an shit
i am thinkin thats why that dude did not want to send me here
gotta gets outta here quick
back to the safe haven of youth hostels and travel guides and shit..
in ya dis ya time

fast forward three yeahs later....

Borders

Las nite i went to watch a movie called The Border.
its a strange non fiction story. A documentary film to be precise.
and its about a border. the strangest border that exist.
people in the film kept saying,

for over 40 years i have waited for this border to disappear
basically them (politicians) just cut a line with a pencil on the map
and created this border. what them did not realise was that
they literaly cut through peoples houses and lives and souls and shit
so relatives were separated from ea other
they had to speak to ea other over the border, not the fence like normal neighbors do
but across the border.
One incident was that a small girl was visitin her grandparents

when the border came into effect
so she was separated from her parents for the rest of her life
she could only talk to them at the border
them people were not allowed to cross the border....
strange shit ah go happen in this world
in ya dis ya time....
